Class Update: March 13th

Math Night- we had a great turnout last night at Publix Math Night! Our class was the grade level winner! I enjoyed seeing you and your children last night and I hope they enjoyed completing their activity sheet.

We have been very busy wrapping up the 3rd 9 weeks of school. I can’t believe we are entering the 4th and final 9 weeks of the school year. Be on the lookout for your child’s report card on Thursday, March 19th. It will come home in a large envelope. Please sign the signature card and attach 3 stamps to the front of the envelope. The sooner you can return these items the better off we will be. The stamps are so we can mail your child’s final report card and paperwork in May.

In math, we have been working on telling time to the quarter hour and 5 minutes. Students have done an awesome job identifying the minute and hour hand as well as the difference between an analog and digital clock. They rotated through time centers this week to practice these skills. We will be moving into line plots and addition and subtraction with 3 digit numbers next.

Students finished their opinion writing piece about their favorite pizza toppings. We celebrated with ordering a few pizzas and having a little pizza party of our own! They did an excellent job with their opinion pieces. Look for their writing to come home soon!

In social studies, we have been learning about Jackie Robinson. Ask your child to share one important fact about his life. They really enjoyed learning about why is an important historical figure. They created their own baseball field with facts about his life.

In language arts, we have been working on possessive nouns and folk tales, fables, and fairy tales. Your child brought home a take home project sheet today. Students will choose one fairy tale, folk tale, or fable to create a project on. Details will be found on the bright yellow sheet. These projects are due Monday, March 23rd. This is the day that we will also have fairy tale, folktale and fable day. Please be on the lookout for more information this week!

Classroom News

We had a great time on our MLK field trip! We started our morning off listening to some folktales that related to MLK’s life. We then toured his childhood home, the visitors center, Ebenezer Baptist Church, the eternal flame, tomb, and Freedom Hall where students were able to see the Nobel Peace Prize given to Martin Luther King. It was a bit windy out but the students did a great job of following directions and really seemed to enjoy the trip. Here are a few pictures!

In math we finished our partitioning unit and moved on to comparing 3 digit numbers using the >,<, and = symbols. Here are a few pictures from our partitioning activities.

100th Day

Hip Hip Hooray for the 100th Day!

We had such a fun time celebrating the 100th day of school! Students had 9 different 100th day centers to choose from. Some of the student’s favorites were creating a portrait of how they would look if they were 100 years old, playing the math game of Race to 100, transforming the number 100 into a picture, and the most favorite being the 100th day snack! We had a great day filled with a variety of learning activities centered around the 100th day. Thank you parents for your snack donations! We couldn’t have done it without your support!

Your child brought home a field trip permission slip form on Friday. We will be going to the King Center on Thursday, February 12th. Please make sure to sign the form, send in the donation, and fill out the lunch form. The sooner you can return those, the better off we will be!

Classroom Update: Week of January 12-16

Wow! We have officially completed half of our school year! 96 days down!! The students came back from our winter break and were easily able to get right back into the swing of things! We have a long stretch until Spring Break but we have a lot of standards to still cover. Your child's 2nd 9 weeks report cards went home last week. I am so proud of the growth I am seeing in each child. They are continuing to work hard to prepare for 3rd grade. I want to thank you for returning your child’s signature card and report envelope so quickly! I really appreciate it!

This week we completed the SLO (Student Learning Objective) testing. Monday, students took the reading portion and on Tuesday they took the math portion. Each section consisted of 20 questions. Students completed the test on the computer. They did an awesome job of following directions, staying focused, and completing the test! We will take the post-test in May.

In math, we have been working on a new strategy. It is called Partial Sums. It is another strategy to use when adding numbers. We have been focusing on adding up to 4 two digit numbers. Students have used this strategy to solve word problems as well. Next week we will move into partitioning. Students will learn how to partition circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths.

In Social Studies, we have been learning about Martin Luther King Jr. Students have been so excited to learn about his life and the contributions he made to Georgia. I can’t wait to see the student’s projects tomorrow!

In language arts, we have been focusing on shades of meaning also known as synonyms. Students are learning that verbs and adjectives have different words that mean NEARLY the same thing. Next week will begin reviewing contractions and turn our focus to opinion writing.
