SLT and Leader of the Month

I am so proud of all of our students who ran for SLT!  They did an outstanding job with creating their posters and sharing their speeches. They really are TRUE leaders and anyone of them would've have made an excellent SLT member. Here are a few pictures from the students sharing the posters and reading their speeches.

Our SLT winner was Abigail and our runner up for SLT is Isaac! Way to go! We are so proud of you!!

During the month of September our focus has been on Habit #1- Be Proactive. We have talked about what being Proactive means and that having an "I Can" attitude is important. When choosing our Leader of the Month for October, students nominated their peers if they felt that had been proactive during the month. Our chosen Leader of the Month for October is Charlotte!! Way to go!!

I hope everyone has a restful and relaxing Fall Break. I look forward seeing the students when we return in October.

Classroom Update: September 5-9

This past week we began learning about the making tens strategy. Students are using this strategy to help them add numbers to 20. Here is a picture of the strategy and how it should be used. We will be working on one step word problems and becoming fluent with our facts to 20 as well.

Foundation Funding Drive

The Foundation Funding Drive has been extended through September 16.  This is the Foundation's largest fundraiser for the year to help continue to keep our Science Lab going as well as provide other enrichment for the students and resources for Addison.

There will be a classroom competition! The class with the highest % of participation by 9/9 will win an ice cream party! (right now, Mrs. Gillenwater is in 1st place)

The top two classes participating in the Drive in each grade level will receive an iPad, too!!  A percentage of the funds raised also comes directly into our classroom.

Don't forget...

When we hit $20,000, Mrs. Hallmark and Mr. Cohen will spend some time up on the roof for all to see!!!
When we hit $25,000, they will KISS A PIG!!
When we hit $30,000, the kids will get to tape Mrs. Hallmark and Mr. Cohen to the WALL.

Please support us in this effort! Visit www.foundation4addison.org for details.

Classroom News: August 28th

I can't believe we just finished our 4th week of school! We are off to a great start in second grade!
This week we finished up our unit on place value. Students rotated through 8 differentiated centers to review place value concepts. We will take our post test tomorrow and begin our new unit on Making Tens.

In science, we finished up our unit on matter.  Students made a flipbook on the 3 different states and their properties. We then made Root Beer Floats. They were able to see all 3 states of matter and how they can change. Next week, we will begin learning about the compass rose and the regions of Georgia.

We will officially begin our guided reading and daily 5 rotations tomorrow. Students will be meeting with Ms. Wade or I each day. They will rotate through the 5 daily 5 rotations. Ask your child to tell what reading group they are in!

In writing, we have been working on having a beautiful beginning, a magnificent middle, and an excellent ending to our writing. We have also been working on our heart maps and writing in our journals daily. On Friday, students also practiced using the transitional words first, next, then and last in their writing. Students have been given a variety of choices for their writing and have many resources to use when working on their writing. Ask your child about one of their pieces from last week!

Leader of the Month- each month students will choose one of their classmates to be the Leader of the Month. Students are nominated and then voted on by their peers. The leader of the month for September is Abigail! Congratulations!

Important Reminders

1. Please make sure you are recording your child's reading minutes on the monthly calendars in the front of the agenda. Students will be rewarded at the end of the month if they have been doing so.

2. Please sign your child's agenda daily. It helps us to know that you have reviewed their day with them and see their behavior color.

3. Thank you for the wish list donations! I really appreciate it and so do the students.

Foundation

Thank you to all the families that have joined our Foundation. If our class has the most participation, we will earn an extra i-pad for our classroom. This is a great tool for the students to use during our math and reading time. What an awesome opportunity that would be!! The most exciting part is that if the school reaches the goal of $25,000 then Mrs. Hallmark and Mr. Cohen will kiss a pig! If we reach $30,000 they will be taped to the wall at school! Please consider donating if you have not already done so. Our science lab is an important part of our school. You can click on the link below.

Science Lab Orientation

Today we visited the Science Lab. Mrs. Knobbe and the students reviewed the rules for the lab. Students rotated through 3 centers and practiced using a variety of tools that will be used throughout the year. Students also had the opportunity to visit the garden to see what had grown over the summer. Tomorrow we will get to sample some of the vegetables!
