Can
you believe we are finishing our 5th week of school? This first 9
weeks is flying by! We have been very busy learning lots of new things. In
math, we finished up our unit on place value and have begun to learn about
making tens. Next week, I will introduce the making tens strategy for addition.
Here is a preview of what the strategy looks like.
In
language arts, we have been learning about proper nouns. Students learned the
difference between a common noun and a proper noun by completing a variety of
activities. We focused on capitalizing holidays, geographical locations, and product names. Next
week we will begin learning about collective nouns and reviewing compound words.
In
writing, we are focusing on writing a narrative. We have done several quick write
narratives in our writing journal. We will begin focusing on having a clear
beginning, middle, and end as well as a hook to get our readers interested.
We
finished up our unit on matter with an experiment. Hopefully your child came
home and told you about our Root Beer Floats. It was a fun way to see all three
states of matter.
Today
we started learning about the compass rose and reviewed some map skills. Next week students will create their own compass rose out of magazines and we
will begin learning about Georgia’s five regions.
This week students also had the opportunity to meet their 4th grade buddies.
They shared 3 things about themselves, 2 activities or favorite school
subjects, and 1 book or series they like to read. It was great to see the
students connecting. We will see our buddies each month throughout the year.
